Abstract:
The present work was carried out to evaluate the diagnosticaccuracy of interventional sonography in the diagnosis of abdominalmasses, also to assess the feasibility, accuracy and safety of thistechnique. One hundred patients with different abdominal masses underwentultrasonic guided percutaneous biopsy, all the patients were submittedto clinical, laboratory and radiological investigations, 102 biopsieswere performed (2 organs were biopsied in 2 patients). There were 39from the liver, 10 from the pancreas, 2 from the spleen, 4 from thekidney, 3 from the adrenal gland, 27 from abdominal lymph node, 14from retroperitoneal masses and 3 from masses in the midabdomen ofunknown origin.Different approaches were performed in this work, generally theshortest, safest and more straight approach to reach the lesion waschosen.Needles used in this study were categorized into two types. Thefirst type was the aspirating needles that include spinal and chibaneedles. The second type was cutting needles that include tru-cutneedle, variable gauges were used. Throught the study, aspirating needles were used in all cases , cutting needles were reserved for those cases in which the cytological result were insuficient or inconclusive.
