Abstract:
After many years of research, drug treatment, in cerebral hypoxia1S still controversial and no treatment appears to be firmly established. Not even the mechanisms causing damage have been established (Si esjo,1981), only that they are linked to a disturbance in the oxygen demand, supply ratio. Enthusiasm for new modes of therapy have waxed andwaned. Gisvold and Steen (1985), have witnessed alternating enthusiasmfor cerebral metabolic depressants, free radical scavengers, membranestabilizers, calcium blockers, drugs that are reported simply to improvecerebral’ function in a ”black box” fashion. Part of the apparent conf-licts m the literature may result from great variety in the modelsused to test pharmacological brain protection. To clarify some of theconfusion it is important to differentiate between species, pre-andpost treatment and the main categories of cerebral hypoxia.Categories of cerebral hypoxiaGlobal cerebral hypoxiahypoxaemiaincomplete ischaemiaRegional cerebral hypoxiaincomplete ischaemiaGlobal cerebral anoxiacomplete ischaemia
