Abstract:
Chronic hypertrophic rhinitis is the end result of chronicmucosal swelling which may be due to, low grade chronic infection, alergy or long standi ng cases of vasomotor rhi ni ti s. Its symptomsare mainly obstructive in nature and characterised by constant orfrequent nasal obstruction and headache, zneezing and rhinorrheaoccasionally occur.Ultrasound has been used as a therapeutic agent in physicalmedicine for over forty years. Although it has been claimed tobe valuable in treatment of a wide range of clinical conditions, there have been few reports of controlled cl inical trial s forevaluating its efficiency objectively (Clarke and Stenner, 1976).In thi s study ultrasound, as a theraputi c agent, has beenused for the treatment of 40 patients suffering from chronichypertrophic rhinitis, which were evaluated clinically and histo-pathologically.All patients were subjected to ultrasonic treatment. Themachine used in this trial was Monostat 733, made by SiemensCompany. Treatment were given three times per week for 10 sittingsat 2MHZ with average intensity of 0.7 watt/cm2 using a movingapplicator technique over the maxillary sinus and the dorsum of. the nose.
