Abstract:
This work aims at evaluation of the possible pathogenic role ofHelicobacter pylori infection in the development of hepatic encephalopathy incirrhotic patients with portosysternic collaterals.Forty two hyperammonaemic chronic liver disease patients, 29 of thempresented with grade 0 to 1 HE had been included in the study in addition to 8dyspeptic non liver disease group. The aim was to detect the role of gastric infection with H. pylori on thelevel of blood ammonia in encephalopathic and non encephalopthic patients. All patients had persistent hyperammonaemia despite of adequatetreatment for gut flora in order to minimize the role of colonic urease as asource of hyperammonaemia. The H. pylori status as well as density of infection was assessed byurease test and histological examination of Giemsa stained gastric biopsies. The venous ammonia level was measured in all patients and correlationbetween blood ammonia and H. pylori status and density was done
