Abstract:
This study was carried out on 300 patients presented to outpatientclinic complaining of symptoms suggesting of GERD. Sixty patients wereselected and classified to the following three groups:Group I : Included 45 patients has GERD without metaplasia.Group II : Included 6 patients has GERD with columnar metaplasia.Group III : Included 9 patients has GERD with intestinal metaplasia.The selected patients were subjected to upper GIT endoscopy withbiopsy for histopathological examination.The results ofthis work can be summarized as follow:1- The percentage of intestinal metaplasia (Barrett’ s esophagus) was15% among selected GERD patients.2- Identical number and percentage distribution of smoking and sexamong studied GERD patients. However, the percentage of maleswere double those of females.3- GERD patients with metaplasia (columnar and intestinal) are elderthan those without metaplasia.4- There was positive significant correlation between grades ofGERD and age of patients and duration of symptoms.
