Abstract:
This study was done to assess the association between blood pressureand the circulating CRP level in the acute phase of ischaemic stroke. We included 40 first-ever ischaemic stroke patients, 20 hypertensivepatients and 10 age and sex matched healthy control subjects during theperiod from September 2004 to August 2005.All were subjected to the following:1) Detailed history taking.2) Complete general and neurological examination.3) Assessment of stroke severity in ischaemic stroke groups using CANSduring the first 24 hours of stroke onset.4) Laboratory investigations including liver and kidney function tests andlipid profile.5) Assay of serum level ofCRP using CRP-turbidometry.6) Computed tomography of the brain. The results showed that:I) There was a highly significant difference in mean values of CRPbetween patient and control groups.2) The mean values of CRP were significantly higher in group II ischaemicstroke patients who were normotensive and developed acute rise ofblood pressure.3) A highly significant positive correlation was detected between CRP andSBP, DBP, MAP and PP as well in our patient groups.
