Abstract:
Atherosclerotic extracranial vascular disease is the most commoncause of cerebrovascular accidents in old patients. Atherosclerosis of theextracranial vessels facilitates the incidence of stroke by repeated plateletembolization or by impairment of flow in the arteries secondary tosignificant arterial stenosis. This study was undertaken to evaluate the carotid artery disease byduplex US, in order to determine the capacity of this system for thedetection and classification of different degrees of carotid disease. In this series, 136 patients with clinically suspected carotid diseasewere studied (82 males and 54 females). Their ages ranged from 20 to80 years, with a mean age of 53.6 years. All patients were subjected to clinical examination, including fullneurological evaluation, and carotid duplex US examination. Onehundred twenty-nine patients underwent C’T examination of the brain, while 64 patients had DSA.
