Abstract:
In this thesis, we have reviewed the embryology and anatomy of the. nail, the relation of the nail plate to the peri-ungual tissues and the blood supply to the nail plate and nail folds. One of the most common nail infection a clinician will see is the paronychia. This consists of an infection of the skin folds surrounding the nail. While bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes acute paronychia Candida albican causes chronic paronychia. Conservative medical management of chronic parony¬chia by using local or systemic candidicidal and bactericidal agents is cumbersome and not always successful.
