Role of adenoid mast cells in pathogenesis of otitis media

Abstract:
Otitis media is a very common problem all over the world. Here in Egypt,is a very troubling disease specially in children as it can cause manyproblems to the child and his family socially and financially.Many causes have been discussed in the pathogenesis of otitis media inchildren. Adenoids have been considered for a long time as an importanteitiological factor.In this study, we tried to compare histopathologically between the adenoidsdifferent children with and without otitis media ( SOM and CSOM),concentrating on the mast cell count in different children and trying to searchfor a role of these cells in middle ear inflammation.This was achieved by histopathological examination of the adenoids of 60children, of them:- 20 have normal middle ear function.- 20 have secretory otitis media.- 20 have chronic suppurative otitis media.Mast cells were counted in different specimens and their counts werethe ages, sexes as well as to the size of the adenoids in lateralX-ray nasopharynx.The results of our study showed that there were higher mast cell countsin the adenoids of children having SOM or CSOM than those with normal
