THE EFFECT OF DIABETES MELLITUS

Diabetes mellitus is the most common endocrine disease. It hasmany complications. The late complications of diabetes includeneuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy.The relation between diabetes mellitus and olfaction was discussedby many authors, with the results suggested diminution of the sense ofsmell among diabetics.We tried to examine the olfactory mucosa in diabetic animals.Fourty-six Albino rats, kept at the same environmental conditions, inspecial metallic boxes, classified into two groups :Group (1) : The control group.Group (2) : Injected with alloxan to induce diabetes, then furtherlyclassified into three subgroups :Subgroup (I) : Sacrificed after 1 week.Subgroup (11) : Sacrificed after 2 weeks.
