Abstract:
This study was carried out at the department of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology , Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig Universityduring the period from July, 1995 to February, 1996.The study included fifty children undergoing minor ENTsurgery. In the operative theatre under general anaesthesiatwenty five children were suffering from recurrent otitis media(otitis prone children) while the control group had a negativerecord of otitis media ( non-otitis prone children ).The test group were classified into three age groups:1-5 years, 6- 10 years, 11- 15 years. The nasopharyngeal secretions were aspirated from theindividuals and swaps from their nasopharynx were taken. Thesecretion were used to evaluate the quantity and function ofsecretory immunoglobulin A while the swaps were used inassessment of the types of cells and their cytopathologicalcorrelation. The study revealed an obvious quantitative difference ofsecretory immunoglobulin A in the nasopharyngeal secretionsbetween otitis prone and non-otitis prone children.
