Neonatal Stress Response to Surgical and Anesthetic Trauma

Abstract:
twenty-four patients have been included in this study, dividedinto two groups. Neonatal group included 12 neonates less than 2 monthsage and adult group comprised 12 patients (20 - 40 years). Patients wereall of the ASA grade 1. Neither of those patients had systemic diseasesnor were taking regular medications. One day before surgery patientswere admitted to the hospital and the routine investigations were done.On the day of surgery, patients were premedicated with atropinesulphate 20 ug.kg’: 1.M. 45 minutes before the operation. On arrival tothe operating room, patients were anesthetized with sleep dose ofthiopentone sodium 2.5%. Tracheal intubation was facilitated withsuccinylcholine 1 mg.kg’ LV. for adults, 2 mg.kg’ for neonates andanesthesia was maintained with (0.5 - l.5%) halothane and 50% N20 inO2 mixture. Ventilation was adjusted to keep the patient nonnocapnicusing pancuronium bromide 0.06 mg.kg” lv.
