Abstract:
Chronic sinusitis is a common condition inotorhinolaryngological practice, one of the operationscommonly employed for chronic maxillary sinusitis isintranasal antrostomy. It is favoured by many authorsfor its simplicity, rapidity, absence of postoperativeneuralgias and oedema, no interference with teeth sensa-tions and lessened patient’s stay in hospital. It alsoprovides sufficient ventilation and drainage for themaxillary sinus capable of reversing the hypertrophiedmucosa to normal healthy mucous membrane instead of thefibrotic one left after the radical antrum operation. In this work we evaluated the effects and advantagesof this operation on the maxillary sinus mucosa, we selec-ted 20 patients suffering from chronic sinusitis basedon the clinical, proof puncture and radiOlogical grounds.Intranasal antrostomy was done for them and a punch bio-psy from the sinus mucosa was taken. After one month asecond biopsy from the mucous membrane was taken eitherthrough the first intranasal antrostomy or through acaldwell luc operation in patients still complaining. These biopsies (first and second) were studied for bothhistopathological and histochemical changes.
