Abstract:
Omphalocele is presenting as a herniation of the bowel, liver and other organs into the intact umbilical cord covering by membrane unless ruptured (1). It can present either as an isolated anomaly or as a feature of a syndrome, as many as 50% of patients with omphalocele have other associated abnormalities (26). The sac may be quite thin and in danger of rupture or may be thick and tough. Rupture of the sac can occur prenatally, during delivery or after birth (2). Unfortunately, patients with omphalocele frequently do have associated anomalies, many of them significant (1). These anomalies may have more influence on prognosis than the abdominal wall defect itself (35,59). Associated anomalies in infants with omphalocele were the major cause of neonatal death (13,22,44,34,94). Prematurity was the second most common cause of death (44).
