Abstract:
Recently serum PON has been extensively studied in relation to cardiovascular diseases especially coronary heart diseases, atherosclerosis, CRF and DM).Although the liver plays a key role in the synthesis of the serum PON and its gene expression has been observed only in the liver, there is a paucity of data as regard the serum activity of this enzyme with liver diseases. The physiological role played by PON in the liver is not yet known, although preliminary observations suggest that this enzyme provides hepatic protection against oxidative stress. This study has been designed to study the serum PON activity in patients with some liver diseases and to study its relation to some parameters of liver affection. This study included a total number of 50 subjects who were classified into:Group I: 10 healthy volunteers.Group II: 10 patients with acute viral hepatitisGroup III: 10 patients with obstructive jaundiceGroup IV: 10 patients with liver cirrhosisGroup V: 10 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. All subjects of the study were subjected to the following:I) Full history and thorough clinical examination.
