Abstract:
Neutropenia is observed in 40% to 50% of neonates delivered to womenwith pregnancy-induced hypertension (Koeing and Christensen, 1989) andoccurs most commonly in very premature infants (Mouzinho et al., 1992).Although this neutropenia is usually transient and not due to sepsis, several studies have shown that these neonates may have a higher risk for~, nosocomial infection in the first few weeks of life (Doron et al., 1994).Granulocyte Macrophage colony stimulating factor is a hematopoeiticgrowth factor for the proliferation, differentiation, survival, and functionalactivation of phagocytes [Lieschke and Burgess, (1992), Bailie et al.,(1994)1·This work aimed to estimate the cord plasma levels of GM-CSF in’.... preterm infants and find the relationship between endogenous OM-CSF levelsand absolute neutrophil counts in pregnancy induced hypertension. This study was carried out in the neonatal unit of pediatric departmenttogether with clinical pathology department in Zagazig University Hospitalsfrom Jan. 2000 to Oct. 200 I.The study included 50 pretenn and 10 full term neonates divided into 3groups as follow:Group I: 40 pretenn neonates whose gestational ages were below 38 weeksto mothers suffering from pregnancy induced hypertension.Group II: 10 full term neonates born to apparently healthy mothers.Group III: 10 pretenn neonates born to apparently healthy mothers.Cases and controls were subjected to thorough medical history andclinical examination. Laboratory investigations have been done including a104 SummarY, and conclusioncomplete blood count, cord plasma level ofGM-CSF by ELISA method andculture of peripheral blood mononuclear cells to study the granulocytemacrophage colony forming capacity of the circulating progenitor cells. Our results showed
