Abstract:
lithium is an aikali metalic element, beiongs to group in the periodic table. it has some of the biological properties of sodium and potassium.lithium was first isolated from the sheet silicate mineral petalite and present in pyroxene silicate (spo-dumene) and in the mice lepodalite. it is abuntant in the crustal rocks in the from of lithium carbonate is widely used in the treatment of bipolar and unipolar affective disorders lithium ion is completely a bsorbed from the gastero-intestinal trect complete absorpation occurs within 8 hours with a peak concentration in the plasma occrring in 2 to 4 hour. it is distributed both extracellularly and intra-cellularly . passage through the blood brain barrier is slow but when a steady stste is reached the concentration in the cerebro-spinal fluid is 40-50% that of the plasms.
