Abstract:
Inspite of the extensive work conducted on blood plasma.lipid changes in different cardiovascular affections, yetthe subject is still felt to need further discussion. Oneof the concerns to be answered is the relation betweenhypertension and plasma lipid changes and their relationto coronary atherosclerosis in hypertensives. This invitedus to study once more the lipid profile in normal, hypert-ensive and diabetic subjects in order to evaluate the mech-anieal and metabolic roles in the atherosclerotic processand the possible interrelationship between these parameters. The work incorporated in this study was conducted on 121pathological cases including hypertensives (94 cases) anddiabetics (27 cases), besides a group of 182 reference caseswhich were paralelly investigated.Besides the routine examination of blood, urine andfoeces, the study involved determinations of the blood levels of the various lipids (total lipids, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol -HDLC-, phospholipids, free fatty acids -FFA- and lipoprotein fractions) togetherwith certain other blood components (creatinin, urea andsugar). The results obtained were thoroughly discussed and comp-ared with those previously reported by other workers in thesame field but in different localities. Our results as regards serum cholesterol levels were low-er than those reported for apparently normal individualsin the affluent countries.
