Abstract:
This study was carried out on 150 patients who underwent open heartsurgery for valve replacement or repair, coronary artery bypass grafting and totalcorrection of congenital heart defects, to evaluate the incidence, presentation andoutcome of non cardiac complications following open heart.surgery. Type ofoperation, duration of cardiopulmonary bypass, and mean blood pressure duringbypass; were recorded. For detection of hepatic complications, blood samples were takenpreoperatively and post operatively for detcrminauon of liver function. Our results showed an incidence of hepatic dysfunction 9.33%.We had found a significant positive correlation between the hepaticcomplications and type ofoperation. duration of cardiopulmonary bypass, meanblood pressure during the bypass and the usc of vasopressorsFor detection of renal complications, blood samples were takenpreoperatively and post operatively for determination of kidney function. Our results showed an incidence of renal failure 6.67%.We had found a significant positive correlation between the renalcomplications and old age, preoperative renal dysfunction, type of cardiac lesionduration ofcardiopulmonary bypass. mean blood pressure during the bypass andthe usc of vasopressors. For detection of the postoperative pulmonary complications clinicalexaminations <U1d plain chest X-Ray were done both preoperatively andpostoperatively for all population of the study. Our results showed an incidence of pulmonary complications 10.67%.We had found a significant positive correlation between the pulmonarycomplications and old age, preoperative pulmonary diseases (i.c.,COPD)presence of heart failure, duration of cardiopulmonary bypass. and mean bloodpressure during the bypass.
