Abstract:
the literature concerning treatment of Bell’salsy has been surveyed and several of the morepertinent articles briefly reported and appropriateremarks made regarding them.Idiopathic facial paralysis. or so-called,Bell’s palsy describes acute perineural facial palsydue to simple edema- of the nerve in its bony canal,and which is d~agnosed by the exclusion of otherconditions affecting the nerve.The unique journey of the facial nerve throughit s long, tortuous and narrow Fallopian canal, andits complex relations, together with the envelopingneural connective tissue sheath and the pattern ofblood supply, accounts for vulnerability to thatcondi tion.The etiology and the pathogenesis of Bell’spalsy have been ascribed to many factors. Ischemiaaccompanied by swelling in the Fallopian canal WaSthe most accepted hypothesis, especially amongadvocates of vasodilator therapy and surgical de-compression.
