CONCLUSIONThe finding of the study indicated that:-The majority of the studied subjects were females, more than half of them from rural area, and most of them belonged to very low and low social.More than one third of the studied subjects had hyperglycemic coma, and thirty percentage of them had hypoglycemia.More than three quarters of the studied subjects (76%) had low level of life style modification, and nearly two thirds of the studied subjects (65%) had low level of knowledge about diabetes mellitus.There is significant difference between the level of education and social classes of the studied subjects, and their knowledge about diabetes mellitus.There is significant difference between educational level of the studied subjects and their degree of life style modification.RECOMMENDATIONSAccording to the current study results the following recommendations could be drawn:- Health education program in each diabetic clinic to provide patient with knowledge about diabetes and self care.- Blood glucose and urine analysis should be available free or with low price.- Mass media should provide to all public, about diabetic care, management and important of modification of life style.- Further study for nurse knowledge about diabetes mellitus, self care and life style modification.SUMMARYDiabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretions, insulin action or both, the chronic hyperglycemia is associated with long term damage, dysfunction and failure of various organsDiabetic patient must be demonstrate a great adaptation capacities to change his life style. Modifications of life style such as better eating habits, practice of physical activity, better control of medication use, and regular follow-up all this can helpThe aim of the present study is to assess diabetic patients knowledge about diabetes mellitus, and their life style.The study carried-out on 160 diabetic patients, who attending to medical wards and diabetic-out patient clinic at Zagazig University Hospital, during period of the study and accepted to participate in the study.An interview questionnaire sheet was used to collect the data about sociodemographic characteristic, medical history of the studied subjects, diabetic patients knowledge about diabetes mellitus and their life style modification.The study results revealed the following-The majority of the studied subjects were females, 65% from rural areas, about sixty percentage of them were illiterate, and the majority of them were from very low, and low social class.Nearly 45% of the studied subjects had positive family history diabetes mellitus. More than half of the studied patients had diabetes since more than 7 years (53.2%), and more than two thirds of them (68.8%) had other chronic diseases in addition to diabeAbout (87.5%) of the studied subjects know the signs, and symptoms of diabetes mellitus, (62%) of them didn’t know the diabetic complications and about 72% of them had no idea about how to avoid its occurance.Thirty percentage of the studied subjects had hypoglycemia, and nearly forty percentage of them had hyperglycemic coma, and no one carry identification card.Majority of the studied subjects make periodic care to take medication, or when feel tired or had complications (36.3%, 73.5%, 12.3%) respectively.Most of the studied subjects not make daily urine analysis for sugar, 60% make blood sugar test only when had complications, and the majority of them not make check-up for eye or teeth.More than half of the studied subjects take high amount of carbohydrates and fats (56.2%), while 50% of them take low amount of proteins and 55% of the studied subjects take high amount of vegetables and fruits.As regard practice exercise the majority (86.2%) of the studied subjects not practice exercise, and few of them smoking before occurrance of diabetes mellitus. More than two thirds of them coping with stress incorrect method or, don’t know how to cope witThe results revealed statistical significant difference between educational level of the studied subjects and the level of knowledge about diabetes mellitus and their life style modification.The following recommendations based on finding of the current study:-- Health education program in each diabetic clinic to provide patient with knowledge about diabetes and self care.- Blood glucose and urine analysis should be available free or with low price.- Mass media should provide in all public clinic, about diabetic care, management, self-care and the important of modification of life style.- Continuos education program for nurses working with diabetic patient to update their knowledge.
