Abstract:
Summary and conclusionAdolescence is a difficult and dangerous period of transition from childhood to adulthood that roughly corresponds to the second decade of life (Boxer, et al., 1989). Adolescent growth tasks and normal psychosocial development become challenged and comproThe aim of this study was to assess the health promoting and protecting lifestyle behavior among secondary School Girls at Zagazig City Sharkia Governurate. To achieve the aim, the researcher designed and evaluated the effectiveness of a comprehensive heaThe total sample size of the study was 295 students from the First Year of the Secondary School Girls at Zagazig City.A pilot study was performed on 20 students and necessary modifications were done. This number of students was excluded from the study sample.An intervention study that lasted for one scholastic year from October 2003 to May 2004 was conducted upon a randomly selected sample from two schools Suzan Mobarak and Zagazig Secondary School for Girls.After implementation of the program and evaluation of its effectiveness by a structured questionnaire in pre and through out the program and reassessed by the same tool for a third time after 2 months of implementation of the program.A structured questionnaire composed of 3 parts was constructed to collect the following data:1- Part 1 socio-demographic characteristics of students such as: age, residence, work education of parents etc.2- The health promoting and protecting a lifestyle questionnaire adapted by the researcher from (William Hettler, 1982, and Pender, 1996) was used in this study to assess health promoting and protecting life style which include these items: nutrition, exeThe results of the study revealed:• Lack of students knowledge as regards nutritional aspects since less than; one third of the studied sample gave correct and complete answers as regards: definition of balanced diet, component of diet (30%), source of Ca+ and its importance to the body (• Regarding exercise, the majority of the studied sample mentioned that sports were important for the body but slightly more than half of them 56.9% are participating in sport competition.• Concerning personal hygiene nearly third of the studied sample had awareness about importance of personal hygiene (30.4%) importance of hand washing (22.4%), the most parts to be washed daily (47.7%) and causes of dental caries (29.8%).• The majority of the studied sample have positive attitude toward having a friend and nearly two thirds of them have positive attitude toward social activity and insisted that there is a relation between psychological state and somatic illness.• Regarding emotional behavior nearly half of the studied sample worried excessively and two thirds of them were afraid of unsuccessfulness in the exam.• Concerning smoking, the most of the studied sample (93.9%) have negative attitude toward smoking, although they had poor knowledge about hazards of passive smoking (64.8%), and hazards of maternal smoking on their baby (43.7%).• Large proportion of the studied sample lack of knowledge as regard: definition of addiction (12.2%) causes of addiction (24.5%), changes appeared on an addicted person (6.14%) and nearly half of them had negative attitude toward taking any tablet from a• After the health education intervention, the level of knowledge among the studied group of secondary school girls regarding all the previously mentioned topics revealed significant increases (P<0.001).• In addition, practices such as hand washing, bathing, nail growing; eating breakfast, social activity remained unchanged after the educational program such as: sport practice, daily sleeping hours, and studying hours.According to study finding the following recommendation can be reached:1- Health education for secondary school students about healthful lifestyles should be integrated in the school curricula.2- Nurses must play an effective role in health promotion lifestyle.3- Provision of a hot line services for adolescents is highly recommended.
