An assessment of education and training needs for construction engineers in Egypt

Abstract:
20- Priorities of educational courses that benefit engineers along their life indicates that, the engineering courses, especially, design courses are in the first priorities inspite of dissatisfaction of all parties with respect to the scientific leyel of new graduate engineers. Indeed, there is a big difference between enjoyed courses and needed ones to perform efficiently as construction engineer.21- The majority of the available educational courses at colleges of engineering now in Egypt have a degree of importance bigger than (5) out of (10). Every course can help in acquiring a certain knowledge for the engineer, but there exists a big difference between enjoyed courses and needed ones. Total Quality Management (TQM) should be applied in engineering education in Egypt, through customer satisfaction and teamwork among all parties. The work market voice should be heard at colleges and institutes of engineering education not the contradictory.22- Contractors should become involved in engineering education programs, by serving on college advisory councils and accreditation boards and by serving as an effective resource such as; guest lectures, job site tour hosts, career day organizers, and internship employers. Site visits are a means to augment what is taught in the classroom by allowing students to see the construction process in action.3- University staff should be involved in the construction field. The new graduate distinguished engineers who -work as tutors should work in the construction field before teaching to the students. College of postgraduate studies should be established in which the new graduate distinguished engineers that intended to be tutors study in it cooperating with the big contracting companies to practice the construction work in general and in a special work related to the M. Sc. and Ph. D. researches. After having the Ph. D., they can return back to their college to be an accredited staff outfitted with experience and science.The relative importance of the 12 duties of the construction engineer in Egypt can be studied for all experience intervals of the Egyptian engineers.The application of Total Quality Management (TQM) in engmeenng education and aining for construction engineers is a must in the age of constant change environmentfthe construction industry.onstruction engineers in Egypt represent a major human resource of the construction dustry, so, a round table among all parties of construction’ should be existedcontinually to determine in detail periodically the different needs of each part to upgrade the engineering education and training.- Establishment of the Egyptian Advanced Academy for Construction Engineering and Management (EAACM) is now necessary, such that, all courses and programs are actually oriented to construction industry development through serious continuous cooperation among all concerned parties.- Electro-mechanical works, and infrastructure systems should be analyzed in detail to determine the required courses and training programs suitable to be involved in the engineering curriculum to upgrade the efficiency of the construction engineer related to this field.- Establishment of the Training Supreme Council (TSC) is a must to unify the different efforts of training organizations to save time and money and work in a team to achieve continuous improvement and sustainable development for the training task in construction.- The mechanism of university staff involvement in construction field should be studied to fill the gap between the industry and the University. It is difficult for a staff member to transfer knowledge without actually being involved in and practicing the construction work.There is a need to upgrade the education before University to serve the construction industry. A study can be made to determine a suitable syllabus that can serve in this framework.Construction laboratories should be existed at the faculties of engineering and higher institutes to make the student familiar with field, at least, for the traditional building systems. The student should work with hand in the laboratory to gain the sense of construction.
