Abstract:
The brittle and fatigue failures are catastrophic asthey are sudden fractures without prior deformation. Theyare governed by crack initiation and crack growth. Newtechniques are now used to retard or arrest cracks toprevent these types of failure.The present work tries to cover the butt weld and thestiffeners fatigue crack arresters techniques. Butt weldcrack arrester is a new technique for arresting fatiguecrack. The effect of residual compressive stress, the changeof microstructure and the weld thickness on FCG rate hasbeen investigates herein. On the other hand, stiffenerfatigue crack arrester technique is a complementary studyfor the previous studies in this field. But the interestingnew point is the study of the effect of stiffener on FCGrate and SIF range in three regions when the crack is beforethe stiffener, under the stiffener, and when it passes thestiffener.This study determines and analyses the material cyclicstress-strain response, the fatigue crack growth charact-eristics of the material under elastic bulk stresses, theeffect of stiffener on FCG rate and stress intensity factor
