Abstract:
The depletion and continuous price increase of fossil fuels, both nstigate the initiation of a national program forexploiting renewable energy sources directed specially to applications in remote areas where the fuel ransmission cost is intuitively high. Wind is a source of clean energy that has thepotential to play an important role in the global search for new dnd renewable energy sources to dchieve a proper energy mix that fulfills future energy needs. It has therefore attracted more and more attention world wide. Wind energy is not uniformly distributed in space nor is it constant with time so that an obvious problem is how to operate a wind turbine over a widerange of dynamic input and yet obtain a smooth output that conforms with a relatively uniform and regular demands. The choice of a system depends on wind conditions at the proposed site as well as on the load distribution to be matched. Energy production from a selected system can be estimated by combining a knowledge of wind characteristics with information on machine performance.A wind power system that has no energy storage capability cannot be relied upon to deliver power at any time and its economic value is then related only to the amount of fuel saved. It is therefore important that some sort of energy storage be an integrated part of such system. A form of energy storage that has been utilized is to use the mechanical energy extracted from wind
