Abstract:
The objective” of this study IS to develop a method for designing an overlay thickness for Egyptian roads based on the deflection measurements and the Asphalt Institute’ AI’ overlay design method.deflection measurements The were conducted usmgBenkelman Beam’ BB’ for six selected roads located at Suez Canaldistrict and managed by the Roads and Bridges Authority ’RBA ’ .. Inaddition other measurements were conducted which included:- Traffic,- Temperature,- Pavement condition index ’pcr ” and- Pavement structure number’ SN ’.A computer program was developed to calculate the requiredoverlay thickness. A group of design curves were developed usingthe computer program to get the required overlay thickness. Finallythe relationship between deflection and each of PCI & SN were studied and tested. The results indicated that there IS no relation between pavement deflection measured by BB and Pavement Condition Index ’PCI’, and there IS a relation between pavement deflection andPavement structure number’ SN ’. The overlay thickness calculated bythe Asphalt Institute and the developed method was compared.
