Abstract:
Colour And Building Facades: An Analytical Study Together with texture and pattern, colour is a definite element of any buildingfacade. Even in the more ancient civilizations, humans used colour to beautify theirshelters and create enjoyable environments by employing it in decorative, symbolic, representative, coding and visual treatment. This study aims at arriving to answers to a central question: What is it thatmakes the analysis of the colour impact of building facades possible? The study alsoseeks answers to the secondary questions that examine the properties and ethicalcharacter of building facades. Thus, facade components, methods and trends of colouremployment in building facades, factors affecting the visual appearance of colour inbuilding facades and factors affecting colour schemes in building facades have allbeen studied and analysed. The study presupposed the possibility of studying and analysing the use ofcolour in building facades. In scrutinising such a presupposition, a systematicapproach has been adopted throughout the whole study in which previous research inthe subject has been reviewed and analysed. Accordingly, and based on a conceptualframework embedded into existing colour theories, the study has followed a deductivemethodology. This approach has resulted in the formulation of the study’s skeleton asfollows:The first Chapter titled ”The General Properties Of Facade Components”looked into the means by which a method to analyse the architectural components offacades in relation to facade properties can be developed.Chapter (2) titled ”Towards A Theoretical Approach To Studying Colour”offers a theoretical background about colour from the physical view point. Thechapter also ventures into the analysis of colour properties of facade components bylooking at methods of colour mixing, measurement of colour and classification ofcolour.Chapter (3) titled ”Methods And Trends Of Colour employment In BuildingFacades” discusses the interrelationship between the colour component and facades. This chapter reviews the historical use of colour in facades with emphasis on the zo”Century architecture. Methods and trends of using colour in facades have also beenstudied. The fourth Chapter titled ”Factors Affecting Colour Choice In BuildingFacades” studies the different factors affecting the visual appearance of colour andinfluencing the chosen colour schemes.Chapter (5) titled ”Studying And Analysing Colour /n Building Facades”proposes a systematic method that can be used in analysing colour usage in buildingfacades. The proposed method has also been tested on a selected building. Finally, the study concludes by stating the most important results, andpresenting specific recommendations concerning the inter-relationship between colourand building facades.
