Abstract:
Reinforced concrete is the most widely used structural material in the world. It consists of concretereiforcing bars compined in rational way so that they act compositly as one unit. Methods of designing reinforced concrete structureshave been developing over the years. Currently the ultimatemethod of design, which was first permitted as an alternativemethod of design in 1956, is considered the more logical andmuch easier to handle than the old working stress method. Inthis method both the ultimate loads and strength of materialsused are considered so that safety factors were adopted on theworking (service) load.Although codes of practice of reinforced concretestructures almost share the same base, they tend to showconsiderable differences in the results. The main purpose of this study is to achieve a developedand suggested modified recommendations for the design ofreinforced concrete structures basing on the present ultimatestrength method. The study covered the design of reinforced concreterectangular, T and L sections subjected to bending moment and shearing force. It also covered all the detailing such that the bond and anchoragement and the cracking.A complete solved example was also solved following thenew recommendation, American Concrete Institute [ACI (318-77)][2], British Standards Institution (CP 110) [4] and the GermanStandard Specifications (DIN 1045) [3], if possible. Theresults were compared and discussed.finally, a good practice design aids for beams in designcharts and tabular form are available for designers in thisresearch.
