Abstract:
Tunnel construction is considered one of the largestnational projects in which high level of experience isrequired. The construction if this project type in Egypt hadstarted by the end of 19708. Since Egypt had no pastexperience of tunneling, foreign constructionselected for this purpose. Some Egyptiancompanies shared with a specified work volumecompanies wereconstructiontoacquireexperience in tunneling.This study have reviewed three Egyptian tunnels having atotal work volume of about 95% of all Egyptian tunneling work.These tunnels are Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, Metro Tunnel, and SewerTunnels. Different innovated solutions were introduced toovercome tremendous difficulties and problems encounteredduring their construction. The evaluation of the tunnelingmethods used ia based on engineering and economic analysisusing evaluation parameters for safety, compatibility, ease ofoperations and economy. They are designed to demonstrate theadoption of tunneling methods used for ground andenvironmental conditions and tunnel design features.
