Abstract:
Road roughness is gaining increasing importance as an indicator of road condition, both in terms of road pavement nee, and as a major determinant of road user costs.Th need to measure roughness has brough a plethora of instru ents on the market, covering the range from rathersi pIe devices to quite complicated systems. The difficulty is the correlation and transferability of measures from and the calibration to a common scale.o correlate and calibrate led to the execution of t rnatlonal Road Roughness Experiment (IRRE) in Brazil1982. As a product of IRRE a single index vas proposed, calIed the International Roughness Index (IRI).In this research, a profilometric method using rod and level survey vas used to measure the IRI levels on variety of road sections in Egypt. A pilot study vas performed tocheck the accuracy of the method and to determine vhether it Is representative or not, using the available equipment inEgypt. After checking the accuracy of the method, an experiment vas designed to cover a vide range of sections vithdifferent conditions and environmental features.
