Abstract:
The possibility of using lap splices in reinforced concrete beams is < increasing due to the use of larger spans and the limited bar lengths. <b As the danger of concrete splitting is particularly great in the vicinity <b experiments have been made to study the < factors effecting the strength of the tension lap splices, such as, < concrete cover, concrete strength, development length, confining < reinforcement and bar end condition. A study of recent literature on <b tension lap splices concluded that, despite the large amount of available test data, the precise influence of the controlling parameters remains unclear. The main purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of some of the controlling parameters including confining reinforcement, concrete cover, their combined effect, and bar end condition on the strength of tension lap splices in reinforced concrete beams. An experimental study in which a total number of 20 beam <b specimens and 16 modified pullout specimens were tested to study the <b effect of the above factors. Results and conclusions that are usefulfor designers have been raised and represented. An empirical equation predicting the lap splice strength is also developed using 340 test results made by the researcher and other different researchers. A detailed comparison between test results and predicted results by the proposed equation showed that it gave very good correlation with the test data.
