Abstract:
Implementation of a fully pipelined system thatcomputes the Two-Dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform (2D-DCT) of an 8 x 8 element matrix is presented. A hardware modeland its simulation program have been developed. The algorithmused requires the minimal number of hardware to perform thecomputation. The basic of hardware components required by theimplementation are ROW, COLUMN and TRANSPOSE. These componentsare used to calculate the 1D-ROW DCT followed by a TRANSPOSEoperation and another 1D-COLUMN DCT. A computer softwareprogram is used to simulate the hardware model.A data set, containing images size of 128 x 128, was usedto test the DCT computer simulation software. Both forward andinverse 2D-DCT are implemented on the same system. This systemof equations is apart of the image cOlnpression system.
