Abstract:
Slope stability is one of the most important problems in geotechnicalgineering because failure could cause catastrophic environmental and humanisaster, in addition to large economical losses due to such failure. Slope stabilizingiles are one of the most widely used techniques to stabilize slopes and to increase theope safety factor. These piles are mainly subjected to lateral pressure from therizontal movement caused by the sliding soil mass. The purpose ’Of this research is to investigate the effect of stabilizing piles onft clayey slopes which contain weak layers such as peat layers introducing acumented case history of the embankments of Al-Salam canal in Northern Egypt.e analysis of the embankment is performed by the finite element program (phase2).e main factors which affect the slopes stabilized with piles is also presented andiscussed. Although the piles succeeded in increasing the slope safety factor, thisbilizing method could not increase the safety factor enough to reach the desiredlue. The results also indicated that increasing the number of pile rows is notective in further increasing the safety factor in return. Another slope stabilizinghnique is studied herein using lime treatment. The proposed lime treatment wasective in stabilizing the slope more than the slope stabilizing piles, and even in thenes containing the peat layer.IT
