Abstract:
Traditional methods of sterilization have passive side effectson the treated cells, medical tools, or tissues because itstemperature raises effect, so this thesis focuses on thepossibilities of applying the plasma in biomedical applications.For a reliable study of the biological effects it is necessary to havestable and reproducible plasma. Thus, the design of the plasmasources is an important part of the study.Utilizing atmospheric non-thermal plasma to achievesterilization is an alternative to conventional sterilizationtechniques. Plasma is an efficient source of various radicals andUV irradiation capable of bacterial decontamination, while itoperates at room temperature and does not cause bulkdestruction of the treated tissue. Plasma induces local changes tocells in a non-thermal and non-contact way; the plasma caneasily penetrate the cavities, which are not possible with lasers.Also the use of plasmas is relatively cheap compared to the useof lasers. Working area of the atmospheric plasma can be small.The main effect for cells in culture was detachment of cellswithout necrosis.In particular, there are three tasks to fulfill:1. The profound understanding of processes and physicalplasma parameters; the electrical characteristics of the plasmaindicating the variation of the discharge current, voltage, power,power factor, flow rate, distance from the central electrode to thetreated sample, and gas temperature.2. Comparing the plasma efficacy of three different plasmasources which are RF plasma needle, RF plasma pencil, and LFplasma jet in the sterilization process.3.
