Scour characteristics around bridge piers

Local scour atound bridge piles, piers and foundations is considered to be the major cause of bridge failure in the world.The scour at a bridge pile principally resulrs from the downward flow along the upstream face of the pile and the resulting horseshoe vortex which forms at the base of the bridge pile.
