Abstract:
Sulphur concrete and mortar are used in many special applications inconstruction due their improved resistance to salts and acids corrosiveenvironments as tanks, reaetion vessels, thickeners, industrial flooring, sewerpipes, tiles, bridge decking, and others. The present thesis offers a comprehensive experimental study for theproperties and behaviour of sulphur concrete and mortar. It was found that theproper concrete mix for optimum compressive strength was 30 wt-pct sulphurfor limestone aggregate and 22 wt-pct for quartz aggregate. While for mortar, the optimum value for sulphur was found 35 wt-pct for limestone sand and30 wt -pet for siliceous sand. The compressi ve strength for limestone aggregate concrete and mortar wasalways higher than the corresponding strength for quartz aggregate due to theimproved bond between sulphur and the aggregate for limest.one aggregate.Compressi ve strength of mortars were always higher than those for concretesboth for limestone and quartz aggregate.Sulphur concrete and mortar are strongly brittle material where crackspropagate along the sulphur aggregate interface when quartz aggregate is usedand propagate through the aggregate when limestone aggregate is used.
