Abstract:
· .Wastewater oxidation ponds (WOP) offer a significantfinancial advantage in wastewater treatment due to theirsimple operation and maintenance, as ’dell as, their lowenergy requirements. WOP has been considered one of the bestsolutions for sewage treatment in arid and semi-arid areaswhere land is available. The experimental investigation has been performed inorder to evaluate the effect of some selected parameters onpond treatment performance. The selected parameters to thestudy are: Solids, biological oxygen demand (BOD), and pHvalue. pH values were measured for their effects on themicrobial activity and organic substance reaction. Solidswere measured as suspended and dissolved in both volatile andnonvolatile form. Suspended solids were expected to exceedthe acceptable treatment level due to the heavy algaeproduction especially in the upper layer of the pond wherethere is more available light than that for the lower layers, which may reduce the penetration of the sun light to lowerlayer and make defects in the dissolved oxygen. The experimental work included the construction of twoprototype models for the pond. The models where fitted witha number of outlet noels for sampling from different locationalong the flow direction at different levels. These sampling
