Abstract:
A study was done to treat the drain water released from oil processing and water treatment facilities in Kuwait to meet the government or Industry health, environmental and safety standards. The drain was located downstream of the oil refinery, which is to be disposed into large open evaporation pits at the PNZ-Wafra Joint Operation, Kuwait. The objectives were to treat the waste and pollutants from these facilities, in order to meet the Government or Industry health, environmental and safety standards, prior to their disposal, reuse or discharge to the environment. It typically contains oil and solids, which need to be removed. Results of analyses of the samples taken for this study showed that Total Suspended Solids (TSS) was about 120 mg/l, Turbidity (TUR) was about 134 NTU, and Oil Content (OC) was about 440 ppm. In this study, chemical treatment was using two types of coagulants, Alum, Ferric Chloride, and a surfactant, such as Demulsifier. The three different chemicals were evaluated under varied concentrations and temperatures to determine the optimum dosage and temperature effect for each chemical.
