Abstract:
local scour in the vicinity of hydraulic structures has been identified as atopic of continued interrest to civil engineers excessive scour can cause structural failure and may also cause loss of life the safe and economical design of bridge piers requires accurate prediction of the maximum scour depth around their foundations it is important to investigate local scour in order to determine how to improve the flow patterns and how to control such scour an experimental approach was applied for this purpose the flow and scour behavior for the bridge pier protective plates (collars around the bridge piers were used to absorb the downward velocity upstream the bridge pier nose insteam of the mobile bed
