Abstract:
The aim of this research is to determine the optimum silicon contentin AI-Si alloy which gives a high wear resistance and tribol(jJical stabilitywith ductile cast iron. Also to select the suitable methods for improvingthe wear resistance of Al-Si alloys with cast iron. The ~l of this research is achieved through the stutN of the effectof s111con content. copper additions, surface etching, structural monneettonand the effect of the appl1ed load on wear rate of Al-Sl alloys containingfrom 8~ up to 16~ Si. Also we have studied the effect of silicon content, sliding speed and the effect of load on the cr..efficlent of friction fordifferent AI-Si alloys on ductile cast iron to achieve the ”goal of theresearch .The experimental work has been carried out on a pure sliding discmachine (TIMKEN MACHINE), for testing the coefficient of friction and thewear resistance of several Al-Si alloys rubbed against ductile cast ironunder different operating conditions. The result” leads to suggestion of utilization of the allw whichcontains 13~ Si (near eutectic), the surface etched hypooutectlc Al-Sialloys, the structural rnodtned hypereutectlc AI-SI alloys In the contactswith ductile cest II’0n exposed to severs operatIng condItIon.It is Interesting to a<X1 that the eodtttons of 2% Cu to all AI-Sialloys Improve their wear resistance to different extents withinoperating conditions.
