Abstract:
The wave diffraction problem through upright detachedbreakwaters was analyzed using the eigenfunction expansionmethod. The different systems of structural rigidity and basefixation in linear oblique waves have been considered. The fluidmotion was idealized as linearized two or three dimensionalpotential flow with constant water depth.Numerical results have been presented illustrating theeffect of various wave and structural parameters on reflectionand transmission coefficients, down-wave field as well asthe dynamic behavior of the breakwater. In order to check thevalidity of the proposed model, a comparison has been made withthe results of the physical model conducted at the Suez CanalResearch Center (SCRC) for Marabella breakwater. Also, the modelhas been compared with other numerical and experimental studies. The obtained results were very close. This indicates that thedeveloped solution is very efficient in achieving the intendedobjectives. For design purposes, a conceptual design charts wereperformed for different detached breakwater layout and structuralparameters.
