Abstract:
Recently , composite steel concrete structures are widely used in civil engineeringprojects and the need for a beam of long span with limited depth with higher loadingcapacity was the main aims for many architectural engineers , such purpose can beaccomplished by embedding steel profile into the reinforced concrete beam section .In this thesis, the behavior of reinforced concrete beams embedded with l-beam steelsection in both flexure and shear was studied experimentally. Test program was devidedinto two groups namely flexural group and shear group. The flexural group variablesinclude varying the longitudinal reinforcement ratios and transverse reinforcement ratiosFor the shear group .the variables are the ratio and distribution of transversereinforcernent. The experimental results were compared with analytical results obtamed by applying theprinciples of flexural theory ft”)r the composite section based on strain compatibility andequilibrium of forcesIt is found that for both 1 wo groups ( flexural & shear) the embedding of steel sectioninto the reinforced concrete beam section increased its failure load over that of the totalreference beams. The percentage of increase in failure load increases with increasingtransverse reinforcement quantity and decreases with increasing the longitudinalreinforcement. Also the stiffness calculated as the initial slope of load - deflection CUI’/e increases overthat of reference beams as a result of embedding of the steel sections into the reinforcedconcrete beam and the stiffness also increases for increasing longitudinal and transversereinforcement.
