Abstract:
performance of vehicle is largely affected by transmission type andtransmission design parameters. The main two types are manual and hydra-matic transmission. The main design parameters which affect vehicleperformance are highest gear ratio, lowest gear ratio, number of gear ratios, shifting points, power transferred during shifting and transmissionefficiency.Beside the previous design parameters, the torque converter parametershave a great affect on hydra-matic transmission performance. The torqueconverter parameters are torque ratio, speed ratio, torque converter inputcapacity factor, torque converter efficiency, torque converter constructionand locking-up torque converter. The fuel consumption of vehicle IS also strongly affected by the twotypes of transmissions. The fuel consumption of vehicle is highly affected bythe design parameters of transmissions. The performance test of vehicle equipped with two types oftransmissions was carried out. Also the fuel consumption test was carriedout using urban and interstate driving cycles to simulate the actual vehicle-driving route. The sequence of matching torque converter with the engine was studiedbased on the performance characteristics of torque converter and theperformance of the engine.Beside the experimental work, a theoretical study of vehicleperformance was carried out. A computer program is developed to simulatethe vehicle operating conditions by utilizing the basic laws of motion andequilibrium of forces for calculating the vehicle performance parameters.
