Abstract:
Increased international competition in the manufacturing industrieshas made the continuous pursuit of greater productivity, lower costs, andbetter customer service a matter of urgency and even survival. The use ofmodem computer-based systems of production planning and control hasproved to be an important part of this ongoing race with competition.Material requirements planning is almost certainly the most widely usedcomputerized production planning and control system in the industrialworld. The pnmary objective of this thesis was to study the materialrequirements planning system and how it can help in obtaining asustaining competitive advantage and to design a versatile materialrequirements planning system on spreadsheets. The proposed materialrequirements planning system can handle product structures with infinitenumber of parts and levels (depending on the available RAM).The methodology adopted for the present work was as follows:1- Detailed review of traditional and current methods used for productionplanning and control of manufacturing systems.2- Theoretical study of the material requirements planning system.3- Designing a material requirements planning system on spreadsheets4- Applying the proposed system to a case study to examine its validity.5- Discussing the results of the proposed system.6- Summarizing the conclusions and listing the recommendations.
