Abstract:
The good performance of concrete in service including itsdurability is one of the important factors which classify concrete as avery important constructional material. The wide use of concrete in theconstruction field leads to study precisely the factors that will affect theconcrete durability. One of the major factors which contributes to a great extent in thedurability of concrete is the constituents of its materials.New trends in environmental regulations related to the disposal ofwastes generated by mining, mineral and metallurgical process havethrown the light on the use of those wastes in the construction industryto replace portland cement. In this work, the mechanical properties of concrete (compression,Indirect tension, flexural and bond) as well as the durability(permeability, sulphate resistance and chloride resistance) were studiedtaking into consideration the effect of the constituents materials such ascement content, slag percentage at 35% and 65% as partial replacementof cement content, the type of coarse aggregate and the use of highrange water reducing admixture.Blast furnace cement of National company was used to representthe mix of 35% slag.Durability was studied by studying the accelerating effect ofaggressive media. This was achieved by submerging concrete cubes15x15x 15cm in two solutions of magnesium sulphate of 7%
