Abstract:
In this thesis, the concentration will be on the traffic problems on computer networks such as congestion. Congestion occurs when the number of packets being transmitted through a network begins toapproach the packet-handling capacity of the network, and the performance of the network degrades. The objective of congestion control is to maintain the number of packets within the network below the level at which performance fall off dramatically.A comprehensive survey of urrent ’switching and routingtechniques are presented. This survey has covered in brief details circuitswitching, packet switching using datagram approach and virtual circuitapproach, frame relay, the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (A TM) with -itsmain features and Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN).This is besides the routing survey which covered routing types inWAN which are fixed routing, adaptive routing, flooding and randomrouting. This is besides the comparison evaluation of routing techniquesin WAN. Then there is a comparative survey of congestion controlavoidance techniques, flow control, and error control techniques. The objective of this research is to build a general simulationmodel to evaluate and measure the performance of the computernetworks. So, the methods of performance evaluation and the analysis of queuing process will be introduced.Simulation study is presented to measure the newly proposed scheme and discuss the queuing behavior of A TM cells in output buffers dealing with three types of queues: the MIMIl queue, the MID/l queue, and cell-scale queue.
