Abstract:
Water management programmes are the most useful tools employedin the optimum use of irrigation water and cultivated land,particul-arly when these resources are limited. The prime aim of this study is to investigate the efficiencyof irrigation water management in Egypt, with special concentrationon the water use efficiency, from the water conservation point ofview. The study is concerned with the public irrigation deliverysystem, the farm irrigation system, and the identification of theexisting problems.A mathematical model was developed to determine the variablesof the different components of the problems. Two different study areaswere considered in this investigation. The required field data were• (oLtect~J and ana Lyz ed using the developed mathematical model.frrigation efficiencies and water losses, from both the delivery andthe farm irrigation systems, have been calculated. Problems of wateruse efficiency have been identified and discussed.A com~ative study has been made between the two study areasto show the effect of on-farm management on minimizing the lossesand maximizing the efficiencies.R~mmendations, that are to be implemented, are based upon thefinal conclusions of the study in order to maximize the overall wateruse efficiency in the study area and other areas in the future.
