Abstract:
The ”Friction Bracing System” supplies an intelligent method to control the seismic response of building structure and it is very effective, safe, simple and can be used in very wide range. It can keep the structure working within elastic range during earthquake events, so it can be used in different kinds of important building in different seismic zones. It can be used in new buildings, as well as in existing buildings to improve its earthquake resistant capability.In this study, the effect of friction dampers on the behavior of structures is investigated when subjected to ground motions modeled by sine waves, with varied frequencies using a developed computer program. The optimum slip displacement corresponding to maximum energy dissipation is obtained. The maximum peak displacement, velocity and acceleration response ratios of friction bracing system (FBS) to rigid bracing system (RBS) are obtained, and compared.A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effect of important parameters characterized the structure on the friction damper efficiency and consequently, the behavior of the controlled structure. The parameters investigated are the time period (Tstr) and the damping ratio of the structure (~str). The two parameters represent the structure flexibility and the type of structure (concrete or steel).
