Abstract:
-The problem of two contacting solid surfaces in relativemotion has become an important area of inquiry in recent years. The aim of the machines designers is to reach an optimum life oftribological systems. As wear is an important parameter in thisoptimization, a full knowledge of the .wear processes and theeffect of different factors on the degree of wear for variousmaterials, is needed.Work, herein presented, is an endeavor towards betterunderstanding of the mechanical wear and of the influence of themain contributi ng vari abl es on it for sane practica I nonferrousalloys.A crossed-cyl inders apparatus was constructed and used inthe experimental study of three copper alloys differing inpercentage of alloying elements. Two al umini urn alloys of samechemical composition (Duraiumin AlCu M92), but differing in ethod of production; one hot extruded rod and the other hot rolled plate;have been also studied.Micrographs were taken, to illustrate the resulting wearin each alloy under various operating conditions of load andsliding speed with and without lubricant (Oil or Grease).
