Abstract:
- 1 -Pollution is a wide-ranging phenomenon, coveringsuch major topics as water - , air -, and soil - pollution. Soilpollution is, also, a wide field for search and research under suchtopics as causes of soil pollution, nature of soil pollutants, criteriaof soil pollution, and effect of soil pollution on its different proper-ties (physical, chemical, mechanical ... et c.),The present study is limited to an experimental investigationof the effect of the change of the pore fluid chemistry (as aconsequence of soil pollution) on shear strength and consolidationof clay soil. The method of investigation consisted of determining theshear strength and the consolidation characteristics of both thereference sample (mixed with distilled water) and the pollutedsamples (mixed with different fluids). The experimental program in the present study has been designed to provide two types ofresults, namely(1) The effect of mixing with such chemicals as CaC03MgS04 (both of concentrations of .25N, .50N, .75N, and1.0N) and raw sewage individually as a pore fluid on the shear.st rength of clay.(2) The effect of mixing with such chemicals as CaC03MgS04 (both of concentrations of O.50N and 1.0N) andraw sewage individually as a pore fluid on the consolidationcharacteristics of clay.
